The relationship between soil and water is more important than ever. Despite being a UNESCO World Heritage Site of exceptional environmental value and beauty, the Wadden Sea, along with its territories and people, now faces an uncertain future as they struggle with hidden climate, economic, and social crises. Factors such as subsidence caused by gas extraction and peat oxidation, soil erosion, saltwater intrusion, eutrophication, and agricultural water pollution demonstrate that this region is in long-term danger of being reclaimed by the sea.
Can we (co)design the landscapes of the Wadden Sea? How can we turn these crises into opportunities? Based on applied research in regional scenario planning and local design projects, this book seeks to envision the present and future of the Wadden Sea and its hinterland through (co)design approaches. Peatlands, agriculture, energy, and heritage all interconnect to promote economies and social inclusion efforts where the landscapes of soil and water serve as the key to overcoming these challenges.
