The the European landscape is undergoing rapid and radical change due to the rise of a network of so-called ‘low-cost airports’—secondary airports that budget airlines utilize—which are beginning to have noticeable physical and social impacts on the region. Starting with case studies, research aims to understand how territories evolve under the influence of low-cost air mobility and to document the effects at both local and global levels. Specifically, the study focuses on analyzing the infrastructure of these low-cost airports and the ongoing landscape transformations in Europe driven by this air traffic revolution. Investigating the infrastructural landscape shaped by this network involves not only examining the new category of ‘low-cost airports’ but also, more importantly, assessing the physical impacts of mass air transportation on European territory. Industrial districts, new tourism developments, and recently constructed infrastructure represent some of the tangible consequences of this expansion, with airports serving as key entry points for urbanization spread within Europe and beyond. Airport infrastructure acts as a catalyst for urban evolution or devolution, influencing adjacent regions directly involved in these changes and facilitating the dissemination of urban models across borders, thus giving rise to a form of ‘airport urbanism’ that profoundly affects the landscape and environment transformations.
